Pink Kissing Gouramis??????
I work as a sales-associate for a large retail store. I work in the Pet department. We just started carrying Pink Kissing Gouramis, and I’m trying to learn more about them.
Do you know anything about them? When they live in the wild, where do they live (lakes, the ocean)? I know they are a Tropical Fish. WHat other fish can’t they live with?
The most important thing you need to know about them is that their adult size is at least a foot (30 cm) long. The baby Pink Kissers often seen for sale can be deceptive.
To keep these fish for more than a short time, you need a very big tank, simply because of their size.
The Kissing Gourami’s scientific name is Helostoma temminckii (sometimes temmincki), so look under that name for more information. This fish has also been listed under several other names in aquarium literature through the years.
It’s a subject of controversy whether pink kissing gouramis exist in the wild, or whether they are just a tank-raised color variant of the closely-related green kissing gourami. Some books say both live in the wild, others say only the green type are found in nature. In any case, the natural range of these fish is roughly from Thailand to Indonesia in southeast Asia. They are strictly freshwater fish– I’ve never heard of any in the ocean– so they would be found in lakes, ponds, and rivers.
Kissing gouramis are omnivores, but have a preference for animal foods such as worms, insects, crustaceans, and small fish.
The “kissing” behavior these fish are famous for doesn’t have anything to do with affection or breeding. It is thought to be a form of aggressive display between individuals.
Like some of the other large gouramis, this species is prized as a food in the countries where it is a native fish.
What other fish can’t they live with?
Well, most other fish, really. They are more aggressive than most gouramis, and will eventually get big enough to eat most other common Aquarium Fish.
