Pros And Cons Of Different Pet Turtle Housing Options
There are many kinds of options available in which to house a pet turtle. Here is a review of the options available.
The main type of turtle tanks available for a pet owner are stock tank, outdoor ponds, Waterland tubs, Rubbermaid tubs, and glass aquariums.
Stock tanks are a very tough steel container. Similar to the Rubbermaid tub, they are durable and don’t break easily, and are very cheap. Unlike other cheap plastic containers, a steel stock tank can utilize most pet turtle tank equipment.
An ideal turtle habitat is an outdoor pond. Ponds are often relatively cheap. If you live in a warmer climate, turtles must take over the threshold during a turtle in a tank, and predators can be a constant threat.
Another good environment is a waterland tub. A tub of earth as a turtle tank enables an ecosystem of turtles, since you can add a site for nesting and sunbathing on the banks of the space created by the tub. Recreating this kind of turtle tank on your own with these features, however, can be both labor intensive and very expensive.
A regular Rubbermaid container is the most affordable choice for a turtle tank. These are cheap and very easy to clean. However, you cannot watch your turtle through the sides and can only view them from the top. They are not very pleasing to the eye, and sometimes the accessories needed to raise a turtle does not do well in a Rubbermaid tub.
Glass aquariums are great are are among the most widely available type of housing available, and are the only only kinds available in many pet stores. The disadvantage of a glass aquarium, however, is also its greatest attraction: the ability to see the environment of the turtle is submerged in the best part of owning a tank of glass. However, these types of tanks of turtles are extremely heavy and difficult to move, store and clean and can shatter or break if treated violently.
An Acrylic Aquarium is a bad idea for pet turtles usually try to swim through the side and seriously scratch the acrylic in the process. For this reason, the glass is the better choice for turtles.
Overall, glass aquariums are the best to use and a pond makes the best external environment.
